| Maria Clara was born the
4th of April of 1989. She is the youngest daughter
in a five children family. She is now 16 years old.
When she was one year old, at the start of 1990, because of her cranial circumference, we knew something was wrong but the specific syndrome was yet unknown. By late 1990, she had her first surgery, to enlarge her skull as to allow her brain to develop normally - a surgery called craneosynthesis. In 1991 it was determined she had Crouzon's Syndrome. In October of 1994 in the "Dr. Manuel Gea González" hospital of Mexico city, Dr. Ortiz Monasterio operated on Maria Clara to rebuild her face. This operation is called 'monoblock advance' and from that time she is on orthodontic treatment to avoid superior maxillary retroflection. She was also operated on her eyes to correct a strabismus that she suffered as a consequence of the syndrome. In the summer of 2005 a 5 hour surgery was performed the upper part of her face, continuing the treatment for the syndrome. The surgery was a Lefort III type osteotomy with subcraneal technique, fixating bone segments with miniature plaques and titanium bolts. The surgery was successful. The medical description can be found in these documents (in Spanish). Now she has a further surgery scheduled for July 2006, where a Lefort I type osteotomy will be performed on the lower part of her face, as continuation of the required treatment. Her admission and surgery is already scheduled. If all goes well, in 2007 she should be back for the last surgery. All these surgeries have been made with the help of other people and organizations. Without this help it would not have been possible for us to make Maria Clara's healthy and her face as normal as possible. Now she needs these two last surgeries done on her to make guarantee her quality of life and well being, and with this we will finish successfully the effort of all these years. |
